Job Title: School Business Manager
Grade: NJC/JE Grade 6, SCP 24–29 (£35,412 – £39,862)
Reports to: Headteacher and Chair of Governors
Responsible for: Strategic and operational management of finance, administration, HR, site management, contracts (including PFI), and business development.

Hours: Contract is 39 hours week, term-time plus 5 school holiday days.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated School Business Manager to play a key role in the strategic and operational leadership of a primary school based in the L6 area of Liverpool. Experience in a school setting is desirable but not essential. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly organised professional to lead on finance, HR, administration, site management and contracts, ensuring the school runs efficiently and delivers excellent value for money.

About the Role

As School Business Manager, you will work closely with the Headteacher and Governors to manage the school’s business functions. You will lead the admin team, oversee financial planning and reporting, manage HR processes, support site operations, and ensure compliance across all areas. You will also help develop business links and income‑generation opportunities to support the school’s long‑term success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on financial strategy, budgeting, reporting and audits
  • Manage payroll, pensions, procurement, VAT and financial systems
  • Oversee HR administration, safer recruitment and the Single Central Record
  • Lead the admin and site teams to ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations
  • Manage contracts, insurance, leases and PFI arrangements
  • Support site maintenance, health and safety compliance and asset management
  • Develop business links and income‑generation opportunities
  • Provide reports and advice to the Headteacher and Governors

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Experienced in financial management, HR processes and business operations
  • Highly organised, proactive and able to prioritise effectively
  • Skilled in IT and confident using financial systems
  • An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to lead teams and work collaboratively with senior leaders
  • Professional, resilient and committed to the school’s values
  • A Level 6 qualification in business/finance or equivalent (or working towards it) is essential.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Strong financial management experience, including budgeting, reporting and procurement.
  • Knowledge of HR and H&S procedures.
  • High‑level IT skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to lead teams, prioritise work and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with senior leaders and external partners.
  • Level 6 qualification (or working towards) in business/finance or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Experience in school finance or educational settings.
  • Project management experience.
  • Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
